Dear Jamie,

This little playlist is dedicated to my dear friend and bandmate Jamie McMullen. We are both equally sensitive and insane, which makes for a fun friendship. I have posted some songs that I think she would like, but you can enjoy them too because I assume you're all top notch folks.
Hope you're having a lovely new year so far!

Songs to Freeze To :: Seafire And It's Waltz

On this blatantly freezing day in Portland, I thought I'd share with you a bit of Portugese warmth. Things you could do with utmost joy whilst listening to this song include:
  • bake a pie
  • roast a beast
  • knit a sock
  • write a letter
  • people-watch
  • drink a cup of something hot
  • ride the bus
  • pet your cat
  • soft-shoe dance
  • play icy-sidewalk hopscotch
  • host a dinner party
  • play a prank on someone
Emmy Curl lives in a northeast Portuguese town and has studied classic guitar in a music conservatory. Her voice is like a crystal pool of water.  I imagine myself mixing cocktails for guests while this song is playing. Enjoy ::  Seafire And It's Waltz and stay warm!

Must Sea to Sea Giveaway :: Recoil / Alan Wilder [of Depeche Mode]

Well, it must be Rocktober, because we already have another ticket giveaway happening.
And this one is crazy.
Win 2 tickets to see RECOIL: SELECTED : A Strange Hour with Alan Wilder (of Depeche Mode) w/special guest Architect at the Aladdin Theater, in Portland.
TELL US IN A COMMENT BELOW WHY YOU SHOULD WIN 2 TICKETS TO TONIGHT'S SHOW. WINNER WILL BE NOTIFIED THROUGH EMAIL BY 6PM THIS EVENING.

Recoil was born in 1986 as a two-track experimental EP, and was followed by an album Hydrology in 1988. The project, started by Depeche Mode's Alan Wilder, quickly grew to become one of the most pioneering projects to emerge into the world of sampling technology.

Soon after recording the most successful Depeche Mode album to date - ‘Violator’ - he returned to the Recoil project for his next album,‘Bloodline, in 1991. Guest vocalists were recruited, helping to produce an album that demonstrated his ability to concoct slow-burning soundscapes drenched in drowsy paranoia.
Long story short, Recoil put out two more albums throughout the years, gaining accolades worldwide and gleaning from a diverse catalog of guests. Alan is on a special tour right now with his newest album, Selected, which is a compilation of his favorite Recoil songs, arranged to provide a complete listening experience. The tour ncludes Europe, South America, and selected parts of the U.S.  and he is with us tonight, first at the SW 9th Ave Jackpot Records for a special in-store meet & greet event from 5-6PM. Then head to the Aladdin to see the show.
Here's one of our favorites,  from the 2000 album Liquid, featuring the 1940's Gospel crooners The Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet.
Warning: This video is full of creepy things. Enjoy.

Must Sea to Sea: Angus & Julia Stone

Please enjoy the first edition of Must Sea to Sea. :// A blog post that will shine a light on shows taking place in Portland from artists based overseas.
[This type of post is needed in the musically saturated city of Portland, where hundreds of amazing shows take place every night.  Though many of them are worth the time and money, there are shows worthy of being selected from the bunch, simply because the artist won't be around again any time soon. It then becomes a rare opportunity. ]
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Angus & Julia Stone (Australia) - Aladdin Theater
Weds, Oct 13th - 8pm - $12 advance, $15 day of show

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
First, listen to the strings in this beautiful song (video below), look at their amazing hair, and then buy tickets when I tell you that they're
playing with full accompaniment at the The Aladdin Theater, one of Portland's most intimate, acoustic-friendly historical theaters.  (STRINGS!! OMG!!) This bro and sis duo just released their new album Down The Way in March. In just 2 months, it became the highest-selling album by an Australian artist in 2010. They have completed their first worldwide tour with all dates selling out and for the remainder of 2010, the siblings will be travelling around the world for festivals and their second worldwide tour.
This is your chance, kids. If you're a fan of this sort of music, it's going to be one of those shows you remember all your life.
